I've never heard the term scolding bird, why do they scold? And who?
He's got a lovely body shape, I definitely see him sitting on a branch chirruping/singing etc. :D

LaurenR.."Blue Jays are fearless when it comes to defending their territory against predators. Smaller birds can benefit from this, especially when Blue Jays give their warning cry. When Blue Jays see a bird of prey, especially if an owl is roosting in a tree for the day, Jays will swarm and scold the predator until it moves on."

We have Steller's Jays here in Washington state and they are very vocal.

This bird is pretty proud of his scolding loudness Scott, thank you so much for your super praise

Dave the jays have an unforgettable squawk don't they, that's the best word for their raucous call! They're such beautiful birds to look at but their aggressive attitude towards other birds is really rude, when I had a big tube feeder that had many stations, it just took one big bluejay landing on a perch to scatter all the others away, even the colorful & pretty large cardinal. I often see a pair of jays in the trees, that is, AFTER I hear them lol. Thank you for telling Lauren more about them & their positive side warning against predators, that is very useful when a hawk is on the prowl for an unfortunate little bird. Fabulous comments thank you so much

It's really true Phil, looks like a big beautiful jade carving of a bird & I love that gentle green color. Thank you for your marvelous praise and perceptive eye

Lol Lauren, scolding is another good word for bluejays, they kind of sound slightly angry or pompous to me, as if, get out of my way! If you look closely at the jade sculpture he is in a rather aggressive swooping stance, the artist captured that look wonderfully. Thanks for your awesome comment & interest in this dominant wild bird

Thank you vintagelamp for your terrific praise & comment about my book info, I am so lucky to have a couple great glass animal ref books and once in awhile I'm able to locate a classic like this one with a late 40s design. They also help me to pin down the orig maker, yr made, item # when available etc. Always makes me feel good to put more info on a post if I know more about it

Lol Karen, I think this guy has the loudest cry in the wild bird universe, it's almost a shock when one flies near you. Thanks for your fun & fab comment!
