I found this large painting at a thrift shop in Berkeley this morning. It is all painted on canvas on a Grumbacher, New York stretcher with keys. It's signed on the front below the V 'Indiana Mills' - which has been very neatly painted on. It has a nicely made wooden frame painted black and peeling a little. it's 41 inches by 39 inches including the frame. Any info appreciated.

I don’t know about the Mills part but of course Indiana is a reference to Robert Indiana, who first made this now ubiquitous design in 1964

When a painting is copied and signed (as an exercise for art students or for personal use) the new artist should also add the original artist’s name to be clear it’s not intended as a forgery. Sometimes the names are in opposite lower corners. Mills is probably the person who painted this copy and Indiana is the attribution to Robert Indiana, as MMNJ mentioned. I remember this image so well from the 1960s and still love it!

thank you MMNJ and string-of-pearls! I wonder if it is a reference to Mills College which is very close to me here.
