Hello, I recently purchased this lovely little lamp for a very cheap price with a view to restoring it or converting to a desk lamp etc
I am posting it up here in the hopes that someone might be able to tell me some more about it perhaps. It looks to me as though it may have had a quite specific purpose or situation.
Also if anybody has any tips on how to go about a sympathetic restoration on such an object, that would be great too.
    Thank you.

      Thanks a lot dav2no1!!
That was great information delivered incredibly swiftly!
So it seems I am the proud owner of a railroad/railway lantern. It totally rings true because I have a very vague recollection of seeing one before as a child, probably in the hands of a train guard.
I'm really very grateful for your help :)

You're welcome. Does yours have similar markings as mentioned in the link? I'm only pointing you in the proper direction, I think a little more investigating it needed

There is a large amount of rust on the area concerned, but it's identical as far as I can tell so I am confident that with some rust removal the letters will be revealed on my one.
Things like this lamp (and this website of course!) are great because they open new doors to collections and collectors, databases, websites/archives, on-line museums etc that you never knew existed. Being able to quickly see fine collections, often well photographed and curated, is fascinating and helps to understand why people collect a certain thing.
I saw some fine examples of railroad lamps....... pretty nice really......hmmmm.......
      And so it begins :)
