My sister picked this up ages ago at one of her favorite auction houses. It's a rather poor copy of Renoir's "La Liseuse" 1874-1876 or "Woman Reading". Renoir painted other similar subjects so the title is a bit generic. The interesting thing is who ever painted it wrote on the back of the canvas vers 1878 "La Liseuse" Paris Musee De Louvre. The painting no longer hangs in the Louvre. It now resides in the Musee D'Orsay in Paris since 1986. So did he paint this copy on site at the Louvre as a student possibly ?? The signature is covered by the frame it looks like Mark B.... or something. The canvas has been put on a different smaller stretcher and poorly attached with thumb tacks and small nails. Also it's extremely dirty and the surface is very rough. I have no idea how you'd even begin to clean it. The colors would show much better with a proper cleaning. I like it despite it's short comings. -Mike-

Gorgeous Renoir painting, it really conveys the lady's total absorption in reading her book - as a big reader, I know the feeling :) Lovely antique frame as well, very nice
