This painting is about 10" x 12" and signed, lower left, "F. Krause 47" there appears to be some lettering before the date, perhaps "cop" maybe indicating that this is an intentional copy of the work of another artist. I have a few other paintings in my collection which were made in museums by visiting artists. So, not sure if this is by "F. Krause" or after "F. Krause".
I think the subject of this painting was a real person. Note the gap in his mustache, suggesting a cleft or split lip.
It is in beautiful condition, looks like it was just painted, possibly due to the fact that it was in a heavy clear vinyl sleeve. A $4.25 GW find today. It was professionally framed using a very nice frame by the Dick Blick framing studio. A bit of research turned up several artists named "F. Krause" but none fit this painting. This appears to cottage craft themed and a common subject for that type of work. Could be Swiss, Austrian, etc. It has a kind of "paint by numbers" feel to it, but is nicely done in non-realist style.
