Asian compartment container

Does anyone know what this item is? I'm curious of it origin, age and purpose. This is something my sister picked up and the pictures are not very good that she sent me. It's about 5 inches by 5 inches and 6 inches tall. With the brass handle it is 8 inches tall. with wood with leather outer parts. She picked it up at a thrift store. Any information you have would be helpful. Thanks for taking a look.
