    (930 items)

This is a really cool piece of Victorian art glass that I purchased on eBay AU. I am all about the offbeat & quirky in glass (in everything, really) & Victorian glass is a fertile area for oddities.
I'd seen the occasional image of conjoined ("Siamese") rose bowls in books but never saw one up for sale until this popped up.
It is made from cased opaline glass in off white. There is a moderate uranium content, more in the inner layer. The item does light up better in person under UV than I was able capture in photos. It has two clear applied prunts on each end, & two tiny "feet" under the middle rose bowl. These applied elements glow more green than the rest.
The five spherical rose bowls are open all the way through the length of the item, which measures 25 cm long & 5 cm tall.
The seller noted that it has a small etched marking under the middle rose bowl - Rd 54494. I looked this up but couldn't find any corresponding registered design for that number. On inspection, it looks to me that the number may be 541494. The writing is extremely small & hard to read!
Interestingly, I have been able to find a pattern drawing for a near identical item that was registered on May 19 1888 by Thomas Webb & Sons with a totally different Rd number - 100456. It is a five piece conjoined posy holder. Only difference between that one & mine is that it has "feet" under the middle three bowls & the two end bowls look smaller in diameter. Prunts on either end are the same as mine.
I do think this is most likely an English product, & possibly by Thomas Webb & Sons. Maybe a slightly different iteration of the 1888 design.

I have no clue as to the origin of this piece, but interestingly, Welz also made these 'conjoined' bowls and it's puzzling to imagine how such items were made. Quirky in the extreme!

      Many thanks, Wow22!
Yes, I'm quite baffled by the technique as well. I had no idea they were open all the way through! Even more amazing is that this one is in perfect condition - though I definitely would not have rejected it even if it did have damage.
With regard to the Welz version - in a vintage glass reference book I have there is a picture of a really cool one with brown, orange & red Peloton decor. It has a moulded ribbed pattern as well. How I would love to find one of those!

Don't be offended but this is just, well, weird.
So cool and I can see why you wanted one.
      Yeah, weird.

      Not offended at all, Karen!

Many thanks for the research, TallCakes!
I'm not sure what is going on with the image link as it shows up as a huge alphabet salad...but the link at the end was very interesting...that shows a piece of Thomas Webb & Sons Burmese (not Fenton) which makes sense as I believe my item was made by Webb as well.
    11. TallCakes TallCakes, 1 year ago
agreed that's not a Fenton piece... seems that the text salad results is an old image from your old ebay au listing... Thomas Webb makes sense...
