Beauty in Exile: The Artists, Models, and Nobility who Fled the
Russian Revolution and Influenced the World of Fashion.
Hardcover – Nov. 1 2000
When I was younger and still working I started a bookstore in about 1990. One girl I knew started training in fashion and wondered about books on fashion and I saw one of my publishers had this book in their repertoire at that time. I decided to order this book but it was expensive around 150.00 and I mainly sold it at a reduced price, so I could sell. I ordered 7 copies but only sold 2 because my book business was closing. I still have 5 of them, unopened. I was very impressed by the book as it was about the people including Russion Royalty who fled the Revolution and moved to France, starting in the world of the major fashion houses in Europe. I remember reading my own copy and this book being my favourite book of that year. The first 3 chapters were background but the rest of the chapters are about a specific individual or Russian designer. so it really starts to be exiting. I remember he wrote the book almost as if the Fashion House still existed and you find yourself cheering them on as if they still were starting their business !~ Probably one of the best fashion books out there !~
What a remarkable book this is !~ .....H...
I was just reading some online reviews of this book. An excerpt from a review.... "The majority of the book concentrates on fashion, but there is also discussion of the theatre, cafe's and other craft oriented activities which the Russian communities produced, especially in the 1920's." The book certainly appears to be a good read and definitely a keeper. Wow five copies.... Nice!
Thanks Falcon, yes when you get to the 3rd chapter it is a hard book to put down !~
Sounds like a fantastic book Phil, the cover model is gorgeous & beautifully attired in deco dress and bracelets
I don’t believe the history behind the Russian influence on art has ever been properly told. The untold story behind what those people went through to gain the freedoms we take for granted and are giving away should be thought in every school.Great post my friend.
This book is amazing and one I would love to read. The photography of the model is perfection. I will look this one up for sure. I have a small collection of Fashion books and had not heard of this one. My younger self went to College to study fashion and it has always been a passion for me. Love learning new things from you Phil. Such a pleasure.
