I am curious if anyone can help me out with dating this table or where it might have been made. I brought it home from the auction last night and just gave it a dusting and found the imprint of characters (roman numerals?) on back side of the folding sides. The carved legs are beautiful. Top also has nice accent carving around the whole thing. It is in rough condition - two drawers in front. It is a sweet table that looks to have lived quite a life.
My guess is, they are assembly marks. Probably a place that made many of these and they mark the pieces as they are worked(planed, sanded, maybe book matched, etc). And then they are fonal assembled.
**final assembled
Thank you dav2n01 - I am impressed that even though top in rough condition, it is s super solid table.
