Hello everyone!!
Here’s one you won’t see many of. It’s the Mad Hatter cast iron doorstop. This one was made around the turn of the 20th century, though no one knows who the maker was. These are extremely difficult to come by. I’ve only seen two or three in books and on the internet and this one is by far the nicest one I’ve seen. Yes, this is 100% his original paint. They were painted very crudely and were available in black with yellow bow tie and red with green bow tie. The fact that he still retains 98% of his original paint, after 125+ years, is really incredible. He is a one piece design and, though we don't know who the foundry was that cast him, he is numbered 666 on the bottom. He stands 6 5/8” tall, 2 7/8” wide and weighs just over 5lbs.
An interesting factoid is that the Mad Hatter and Alice were the only two characters that appeared in both of Lewis Carroll’s books, Alice In Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass.
Thanks for stopping in for a look!!
