Hello everyone!!
Another vintage doorstop for the Halloween season is this rare cast iron Jack-O'-Lantern. I love this one and he's received a lot of attention here at home. He was cast by Coldwater Foundry and I'm told, from research, he was cast in the early 1960's and fewer than 25 were ever cast. The Coldwater Foundry name is stamped into the back of the doorstop as seen in pic #3. I have yet to find any information on the Coldwater Foundry that cast this Jack-O'-Lantern doorstop, but I did find out that very few of these were ever produced. I've wondered if this could have been cast at a foundry in Coldwater, Michigan, but that's just a guess. This one is another highly sought after doorstop. He's a big one and stands 13 1/8" tall, 7 3/8" wide, 3 1/2" deep and weighs nearly 13lbs!!
The tradition of the Jack-O'-Lantern actually began in the British Isles in the 19th century. The name is also tied to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a drunkard who bargains with Satan and is doomed to roam the Earth with only a hollowed turnip to light his way.
Thanks for stopping in for a look at my cast iron Jack-O'-Lantern doorstop!!
