I bought this at an estate sale and I was intrigued by what appeared to be silk thread embroidered eagle and flags. I'm not sure what it is exactly called so I apologize. I have been trying to find a similar emblem with the way the eagle and flags are displayed but I have not had any luck. Actually, my searching has brought me here. I have also done countless image searching to identify the individual in the portrait. I thought it was a young Harry S Truman but a couple features a a little off.
Anyway, if anyone has any ideas on time period or any other on this item I would look forward to hearing anything. Thank You
Welcome to CW!
I cannot answer your questions but I can help you get your pictures to post correctly:
On your device, edit the borders of each photo - just a tad will do.
Then on CW, edit your post by removing each picture and replace it with the newly edited version. Your pictures will then show up in an upright position.
Have you opened it up and looked for clues?
Watchseacher thank you for the help in getting the issues with the layout of the photos fixed!!
dav2n01-I opened it up. That is I removed the back paper and it had no markings. TBH the actual wood the portrait is on is so well nailed in place that I did not want to damage it trying to investigate any further.
Glorious Object. Welcome.
This is Japanese embroidery. They became popular in the 1890s and continued until about the 1940s. Most that I have seen were souvenirs of US Navy sailors.
Yours is unusual in that a large photograph was on the cloth before the embroidery was applied— usually they have a small window for an attached image.
These were popular souvenir items and no reason to suspect it is of someone famous.
I have several examples posted on this site and many more in my collection.
