Hello everyone!!
I recently picked up this unique little piece. It's a hand carved “Drunkard On Barrel “ music box. This was carved in the early 1900's by the ANRI company of Italy. It’s still in wonderful condition. There are several of these on the market today , but few have the music box attached. I also happen to have another one of these without the music box . I’m told that this is a container for keeping pipe tobacco or cigarettes in.
The music box still operates beautifully, though I don't recognize the tune it plays, but the string that pulls up to activate the music box has long deteriorated. The original string would have also caused the man’s head to turn from looking sideways to looking straight forward. I don’t want to attempt to replace the string for fear of damaging this piece . He stands 6 3/4” tall when fully open.
In the late 19th century, Alois Riffeser traveled around Europe selling wood carved figurines, which were acquired from a small village in the Alps. Soon after, the ANRI Company emerged in 1912 with Josef Anton Riffeser at the helm.
Thanks very much for stopping in for a look!!

I think I say this about all your stuff but...thats cool. Never seen this one before, great piece. I'm glad I don't live anywhere near you, because you find all the good stuff.
kivatinitz,
Thanks very much!! I wish I knew what the name of the tune is.
Dave,
Lol, Thanks friend!! I've seen a few of these with the music box, but most all I've seen either had an inoperable music box or was not in near as good of condition as this one. Got lucky finding this one in such good condition!

some listings on WP are saying the tune is "How Dry I AM"
