The holidays are fast approaching and as good a reason as any to do a bit of cleaning. We all probably have that one "catch all" room that requires organization. That being said you sometimes discover long lost treasure tucked away on a dusty shelf. Case in point this very MCM and mesmerizing spiral design vase by Hungarian potter Livia Gorka. Done mostly in yellow and grey with a turquoise interior and a few rust accents this piece measures 7" H x 5" W. The clay body of this vase is quite thick so it's heavy for it's size. Livia's work was largely inspired by nature and influenced by the abstract style that was so prominent in the 60's. -Mike-
    Gorka Lívia
    ( Born -Veroce Hungary March 5, 1925 - Died - Dizel, Tapolca August 4, 2011)

Livia Gorka was awarded a certificate as master potter in 1947. Her master was her father, Géza Gorka. A free-lancing artist, she worked in the Gorka workshop in Verõce until 1959, and in her own studio since then. The source of her art is nature, her typical objects are large asymmetrical vessels, idols, fish, birds, stones. She adopted the pre-wheel archaic technique of working in clay. Creates unique artifacts, prefers series and groups of objects. Makes high-fired items of her own clay bodies, often stoneware. She uses oxide-glaze, combines clay with metals frequently. The palette of her works of powerful plasticity is reserved.
Member ot the Association of Hungarian Artist (1956), The Hungarian Art Fund later MAOE (1955) and IAC, Genf.
