Bought this helmet at the car swap meet the other day. Guy said it was a 60's drag helmet. As we walked around the fairgrounds 10 people stopped me to inquire about it. We heard drag helmet, salt flat helmet, and rocket man helmet. This was not altered, but is factory made. Bell-Tex Longbeach Ca. Anyone know?? Thanks.
Thanks for the love Esther110 and officialfuel.
Thanks jackart and FineLines. It kind of does.
It kinda looks like a welding helmut without the lens. What are the knobs on the side for, is it a flip-up helmut?
What I think you have is a very early Bell Star helmet. Originally released in 1966 (first full face helmet). Bell re-released the classic Star last year with slightly larger hole but has the same feel to it.
Can't take full credit for this info. Got help from my buddies over on the Jalopy Journal forum. Hope that helps.
bell star didnt make a helmet like this - what they done in the shop was taken a old welding helmet and used it for drag racing head gear
Says Bell-Tex inside and the mateial is thicker than any welding helmet I have ever had. The original Stars came with a fixed lens. Standing by my on line buddies on this one. I don't think its a convered welding helmet.
Vontrike, could we see a back shot of this.
Gordon Johncock ran a Bell helmet with a narrow opening like that as did Shirley Muldowney. Have pics but can't include thin in this reply.

Thanks bratjdd and BELLIN68.

Love the lid! Looks like it would have made an excellent prop for an old Sci-Fi thriller.

Now THAT'd be a hella-fun "mask" to wear out and about in these daze of covid-craziness... <lolol>
Jimmy Caruthers wore a small opening Bell helmet back in 1974.
He raced midget cars, sprint cars, and Indy Cars.
Thanks everyone, I haven't been on here forever. Hoot60, I'll definitely look into that. There's not a lot of visibility but it's so cool looking. AnythingObscure, it sure would, lol. Stay safe friends.
As soon as I saw it I immediately thought about the movie The day the Earth stood still....Awesome Find!
