Found this book at a flea market in south Alabama on 9/6/10. I did some research on the author, J. Dorman Steele, Ph.D., and see that he is a highly respected educator and author. The print date is 1870, there is writing inside the front cover ("George A. House Book Tiffin Ohio"). Mr. House's name is also stamped right side up and upside down, as is the name stamp of "M Voorhies 1875". There are several phrases written on different pages throughout the book. One phrase is "Turn About is Fair Play", someone wrote "My Own Dear Peggy" on Page 219. It's pretty cool to have these musings from whom I assume are students from the 19th or early 20th century. I wasn't able to come up with any specifics regarding the value of this particular book, however. Maybe someone out there has some ideas? Thanks! sh

I don't know how you feel, but generally I would rather have an 1870 "real" book in my hand than a reprint. The listed website shows various dealers asking $5 to $19 for the real deal and $23 to $60 for current reprints.

That's odd that they'd ask more for a reprint than the real deal, isn't it? Thanks for the direction! I appreciate it!

Just came across a copy printed in 1872. Estate of a neighbor. The publisher states that the volumes are adapted to Public and High Schools. That in and of itself is interesting since it makes a distinction between the two.
Inside cover is written "Junior Class of the High School 1878" and the some math home work is also written on it.
I am finding the writing and descriptions fascinating. The real volume is a little beaten up but looks just like yours
also signed just above Natural Philosophy is the name George Siebers-presumeably the student.

I found my copy of this book on 11/13/11 at a flea market in NC.....I found out based on the web info, that this book never was copywritten. The published date I have of 1870 would make it original and yes i agree, pretty strange a reprint would go for more....makes no sense at all. It is odd that two of us found it in the South. I am from Chicago....so I feel kind of lucky!! I love old books.
