Today I am posting a huge vase Sergio bought from Dorita Ferrari of 42 cm high. It was cheap because she was convinced it is an Indian made porcelain. The confusion was due to the Asiatic look of the decoration and because of the backstamps (figure 3) with the pattern name India and Bisto that could sound like Indian. It is appealing because the blue pattern is against a deep orange that with the flash of the camera seems more yellow. In fact we were convinced that it was red. Sergio found a blog on the web that depicts two vases with the same décor and describe them “two vases which use a blue and white floral pattern called "India". Rather boldly, the background is coloured in a vivid orange. This orange colour became more and more popular into the 1920s and 30s as designers like Clarice Cliff and Susie Cooper used it for their graphic, geometric designs. Whereas Cliff and Cooper used the colour orange for its own aesthetic merits, Bisto tended to keep it in the background.” http://porcelainporn.blogspot.com/2008/05/blue-white-and-orange.html
In the site https://www.thepotteries.org/ about the backstamp says that the Caduceus mark was registered as a trade mark by Powell & Bishop in 1876 the mark was also used by subsequent partnerships including Bishop & Stonier. Caduceus: A winged staff with two serpents twined around it, carried by Hermes (Greek God) it is a symbol of commerce. In 1933 the business was bought out by George Jones and Sons Ltd. Manufacture was moved to their Crescent Pottery, the name Bishop & Stonier was kept. Around 1936 the name 'Stonier' was dropped from the back stamp. Thus, this vase is from 1920 to 1933. I think that perhaps someday I will post all the orange porcelain we have all from this period, small figurines and some little trays. Thanks a lot for looking.
