This quarter plate ambrotype depicts two sisters in similar dresses each wearing a gold ring and bracelet. Additionally each has a nicely tinted coral necklace. The younger child looks like her patience for the posing has worn out.

The image is housed in a thermoplastic wall frame (Berg, 7-61G) that features a simple oval design with ornamental beadwork and burnished gilding.

The wall frame bears the patent information that traces to H. Halvorson of Cambridge, Mass. who was granted this patent for a "new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Daguerreotype Cases" in 1855.

Both the case and ambrotype show very little wear for their 150 year age.

Reproduction in any form is not authorized.

Here's another for you van-- not someone "of special interest".

What is this worth as a picture WITHOUT the frame?
    4. vanskyock24 vanskyock24, 13 years ago
its worth about what someone will pay for the pic maybe 20.00 it also depends or what area you live in also. most your pics are 1 to 5 buck pics

The question was about value, not what I pay.

I think every collector/ dealer looks to buy as cheaply as possible-- that is the thrill of the hunt.

I agree with Scott. If I buy something I want to pay as little as possible. I once bought a book for under 50 cents and sold it for over $3,000. So value doesn't have to correspond to what an individual is willing to pay.

i agree to being in antiques my whole life i dont pay top for nothing unless i want it for myself. im just saying most pics dont bring much except for war or a well known person

No-- you made that comment about my antique photographs, which again you won't find a $1- $5 one in the lot.

Thanks tony-- I broke the frame on this one. I dropped it and the thermoplastic shattered into pieces-- too many small pieces to glue together, so it ended up in the trash.

Luckily the ambrotype survived and has since found another home!

Well, the frame served its purpose-- without the frame, the ambrotype would have probably shattered into bits as well.

      Thanks again for looking tony!

Great image and very unfortunate that the frame broke; it was more special than you realized. There are collectors who specialize in frames and cases yet don't care much about images.
    14. scottvez scottvez, 12 years ago
      Yes, I agree.

The frame itself (Quarter plate size) was very desirable and should retail for about $150+ EMPTY.
