Hello everyone!!
A few months ago I posted a cast iron John Bull doorstop. Well, I found another to add to the collection. I decided to paint this one with a different color scheme than the previous one. As I mentioned in my previous post, John Bull is to the UK as Uncle Sam is to the USA. This doorstop was made in England, of course. He stands 9 3/8" tall, 5" wide and weighs in a just over 3lbs. Pic #4 shows both of my John Bull doorstops side by side.
For anyone who may have missed my previous John Bull post, a few months ago, here's a short history of John Bull. John Bull originated in satirical works of the early 18th century and would come to stand for "English liberty" in opposition to revolutionaries. He was popular through the 18th and 19th centuries until the time of the First World War, when he generally stopped being seen as representative of the "common man". John Bull is usually depicted as a stout man in a tailcoat with light-colored breeches and a top hat which, by its shallow crown, indicates its middle class identity.
Thanks for stopping in to check out my latest John Bull doorstop!!
