Another piece passed down 3 generations, not sure of the period. Image on top is a painting that is inlaid into the mirror. Love it and use it everyday!

Mediatechy, could you give us an aproximate date?
"three generations" could be as late as the 60s...(I would be a third generation of a 60s inheritance, my adult children being even the fourth!)

      Esther110,
Based on my calculation the mirror is at least 100+ years old. My Mother who is in her mid eighties now received it in the late 1940's in New York. At that time it was 2 generations back. So my mistake, I am the fourth generation. I was trying to date it by the clothing they are wearing in the painting?

The painting can be just a romantic rendering on the frame, the clothing won't give you a correct date. Family history on the piece, on the other hand, is the best.
The mirror is lovely, I would use it everyday too!!

      Thanks Esther110,
So how do you calculate it, is there a standard 50 years per generation formula or something?

'Generations' is not an accurate time measurement. Ask your mom if she remembers it in her mother's house, and in her grandmother's and so on. Calculate the earliest record of it based on her memories.
A generation is just the time between one step in the process of it getting to you and the next. But it can be as long as 50 years or as short as 10 days...
I am sure someone on here can give you an aproximate date based on the picture.
Are there any markings, stamps, stickers on the back?
Does your mom recall any stories about the mirror?
It's all in the detective work you do.
And trust me: you are lucky to have your mom to tell you. Most of us started valueing some of our stuff after the storytellers were gone...
And I am sorry, I don't know enough to date it for you, but I can tell you how NOT to do it. *blush*

A lovely, French-style mirror, mediatechy. I can't speak to the age of your mirror, and these were highly reproduced in the 1950s and often had "courtship" scenes.
