Here is another piece of art glass signed Hartman and dated 1974, snapped pontil, 2 lbs 5.3 ounces. My other piece is dated 1973 and I found a third piece dated 1975 that is quite well done. This vase is 6" high x 4" widest diameter, signed "hartman 74" on the bottom and decorated with three flowers.

Similarly signed works are often attributed to Hawaiian glass artist David Hartman, but even by the mid 1970s his work was very different in character. The mid 1970s is still pretty early in the American studio art glass scene, so I have been looking more at Europe as the origin of my pieces, since the studio art glass scene there was older and there were more artists working in small studios. I think another American artist named Hartman as prolific and accomplished at this artist was would have left some trace on the American studio art glass scene. I will say that my pieces are signed very similarly to David Hartman's work, but block letters are not very distinctive. It could be that these few vases are just a different theme pursued by David Hartman. He is deceased but there is a web site devoted to his work, so I have sent a query to that site.

Some of this artist's work, which is a bit Brutalist in style, is quite beautiful. The piece in this post is on the low end of what this artist was able to accomplish at this time. Maybe just paying the rent with this one.

I still can't identify my other "K. Hartman 73" thing. It is very different from the work of both artists. I think that one is definitely American, possibly by a student of the glass program at a local university. I did find it in a thrift shop in that area.
