This bowl is about 5" in diameter x 2.75" high, unmarked, with turmeric cloth and signed tomobako. Some of the text on the lid says "Mashiko Ware" but most of it I could not translate. From an on line auction.

Though it appears to have gaps in the glaze down to the clay, there is a layer of clear glaze over the entire surface, except for the very bottom, which is rough and unglazed. There are at least three layers of glaze above the white clay. I am not sure how this effect was accomplished. It turned out to be a much nicer bowl than expected, both visually and tactilely.

I was not really that interested in it, after some immediate attraction to it, and doubted that it was Mashiko, thinking it might be Shino, until I was able to translate some of the text. Nothing about it really screams "Mashiko!!!" to me.

I am pretty short of funds right now, but every once in a while will take a gamble on something by throwing out a significantly lower bid and trusting Fate to decide if I should have taken a swing at something. This was one such event and my gamble for the month.

    Kiln and artist a mystery.
