I bought this amazing Seth Thomas Grandfather clock from a fellow vendor at our antique mall. He told me it was an estate sale piece but it had some damage as you can see. The weights are extremely heavy and the previous owner had dropped one trying to hang it. It went straight thru the thin panel at the bottom shattering it to bits. Needless to say he gave me a very good price considering the damage. He even delivered it for me as it's quite heavy. Once we had it set up I was eventually able to remove the damaged panel and replace it.
Not sure of the age but I would guess it's 70's or 80's vintage. Beautiful beveled glass on three sides with access panels at the top. Everything on this clock is big, weights and pendulum. Made my folks little chain driven Ridgeway (not running) look tiny by comparison. It has 3 selectable chimes as well. Whittington , St, Michael's and Westminister. The moon phase at the top works perfectly too. Winding of the cable driven movement uses a large crank instead of a key. Really takes a bit of muscle too to raise the massive weights. I have to say as much moving as this clock has had it runs great and keeps accurate time from the minute we set it up. Great job Seth ! -Mike-

Beautiful clock, great buy! Seems like an excessive amount of weights.. Just got my family's grandfather clock wound and running. Think I got it set perfectly now and it's super accurate.

      Beautiful clock.
Have you tried holding the weight up a little to take the strain off the mechanism when you wind it? Not too much as you don't want the wires to tangle.
My grandfather clock was built with no bottom probably in case something like happened to yours occurs.
Blue the puss sometimes hides under it looking out the glass door with great merriment while the humans look for her :)

Thanks dav2no1.. I've heard that the cable and pulley clocks are more desirable and more accurate than chain clocks. I have a much smaller Ridgeway that uses chains and it makes grinding noises and the weights slip and drop like the gears are worn. Not sure it's worth repairing but it was my folks anniversary clock that my Dad purchased for my Mom in 1986.

Thanks BHIFOS for the"love" and comment. I wonder how such heavy weights effect those thin cables and pulleys year after year. So support while winding seems like a good idea. Of course your bottomless one makes a great cat cozy. :)

Bought new in 1998. I always support the weights when winding the clock.
