I am still populating the walls in New House with art, mostly from art from one pile or another at Old House that did not find space in my walls.

This one was hung behind a towel rack in my bathroom for 10-15 year so only saw daylight when I was changing towels. Though she died over 60 years ago, there was a retrospective of her work a few years ago.

unnamed, Mary Leath Thomas, 10" x 15", watercolor on paper: Mary Alice Leath was born on 25 February 1905 in Hazelhurst, Jeff Davis County, Georgia, the daughter of John William and Bessie Gill Leath. John was a merchant in 1910 and 1920. Mary studied at the Georgia State College for Women, Duke University and the Women's College University of North Carolina where she studied under Gregory Dowler Ivy. Mary was married to a man named Stewart, probably before 1930. She wrote a book titled Correlating Art With Other School Subjects, under the name Mary Leath Stewart, which was published by the Duke University Press in 1935, so likely had been a teacher for some time by then. She taught in Albemarle, North Carolina Public Schools, Federal Women's College, NC, University of Georgia, etc., and became an art teacher in Greensboro, North Carolina schools in the Fall of 1936. Her art was part of an exhibition held by the Fairmont Women's Fine Art Department in Lumberton, NC in 1942 so she did work under the name Mary Stewart or Mary Leath Stewart. A possible example of her work under the name Mary Stewart may be viewed on AskArt.com. The notice of the Lumberton exhibition stated that she was assistant art professor at the Womens College of the University of North Carolina. Mary married Howard Wilber Thomas, also an artist, about 1945. Mary exhibited widely under both the name Mary Leath Stewart and Mary Leath Thomas and won several awards for her work. It is possible that she may also have done some work as Mary Leath. Examples of signatures from her work indicate that she did not use her maiden name in her signature after her first marriage. She is listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk, several editions of Who's Who in American Art, Davenports Art Reference and Price Guide, Women Artists in America by Collins, and other reference works. She is "listed" on AskArt.com, ArtPrice.com, etc.
Mary Leath Thomas died on 3 May 1959 in Athens, Georgia and is buried in the Lakeside Cemetery in Conway, South Carolina, near her parents.

I have never really cared for this painting but it is by an interesting artist and was a bargain. I had fun researching him.

unnamed, Johan Hilding, 15" x 18", oil on canvas, 1948, artist's name plate on frame: Johan Hilding (aka Johan Hilding Hägleby) was born in 1900 in Häglinge, Scania, a son of John Prine and Emma Smith. He studied at Otte Sköld's painting school in Stockholm and elsewhere. Sköld founded his school in 1929 and the school became the Arne Pernby school in 1949 when Sköld accepted a position at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Stockholm. Hilding primarily painted landscapes and figurative works. All of the works by Hilding found in auction records were oils, and spanned the 1940s and 1960s. He is not listed in any art reference work but his work appears frequently at auctions in Sweden and Denmark. He signed both as "Johan Hilding" and as "Johan Hilding Hägleby". It seems that Hilding added his wife's surname to his name sometime after 1948. Her name was Aina Hägleby. I was able to contact Johan's grandnephew and expect to receive more information about this artist.
    Hilding died in 1981.

I love this painting but never had wall space to display it, so it has been in the box it came in for 15-20 years. So happy to see it on the wall? A bit of glare on this image..

unnamed, Johannes Hubertus Mengels, 40" x 20", oil on canvas: Johannes Hubertus "Ber" Mengels was born 6 May 1921 in Heerlen, Netherlands. There are several web sites devoted to his work. Here is one.

"River Scene", Izetta Perkins, 7.5" x 9.75", watercolor on paper: Izetta Elaine Perkins was born in Grand Island, Hall County, Nebraska on 29 September 1926 a daughter of Ernest G. and Iva Murriel Hiddleston Roseberry. She was married to Grover B. Perkins about 1947. He died in 2007 in San Antonio, TX. Izetta was a member of the River Art Group in San Antonio, TX. This work was shown at the 2001 River Art Group Exhibition, according to the card taped to the back. She was living as of March 2018 when I found this painting at a thrift shop in Peoria, IL. I have not been able to find out any further information about her. She was still living and active as an artist in 2020 and I was able to contact her and we had a nice conversation and we exchanged a couple of letters which are in my files. Somewhere...

I really love the painting by Johannes Hubertus Mengels. A very strong work. Please find a free spot on your wall somewhere. This painting deserves it.
