This cast iron tray is 9.5" long x 5" wide x 2" high, stamped "JAPAN" on the bottom. Very fine casting, with green faux verdigris finish. It was slightly rusted when I found it, but a session with a nylon bristle brush and a short soak in oil cleaned it up.

Maker unknown. Not made for export based on the stamp, but many were exported. I found a couple of other examples of this tray but they were in very poor condition so the finish is likely quite thin.

Uh, yeah, John2Nhoj, that is what "faux" means. Duh. Removing the faux finish would definitely impact the value, though it does not have much value either way. When a piece like this shows rust, meaning the finish is already damaged, but the finish is largely intact on this piece, so a light brushing to remove loose debris and then treating it with oil will arrest the further degradation of the finish. Otherwise, the finish loss will spread as the rust spreads. It is iron, after all. Once the finish is damaged it will continue to rust and the rust will spread. I have saved many cast iron pieces with various types of finishes.

You were right about one thing, though, John2Nhoj, the faux finish is probably meant to simulate copper..
