Phil this is a very pretty abalone piece, enhanced by being cased over to protect the shell. Some of the abalone designs have paler colors perhaps a bit faded by age (most silver set type were made in the 60s) but I love that they are always a variety of blue-green coloring. There is a Hawaiian jeweler with a NY branch, I believe it is called Hoku, that makes very expensive paua shell (close to abalone) jewelry set in 14k gold or platinum, now THAT is really valuable, and they too love designs representing the ocean, its animals & anything Hawaiian.
