Federal Glass Company was founded in 1900 in Columbus, Ohio, as a small business making pressed glass with etched patterns using molds and hot liquid glass. Production was limited to how quickly workers could produce the items by hand. In the 1920s, the owners switched to automated processes and increased the company’s output. By the next decade, Federal had grown to be one of the largest manufacturers of Depression glass, recognizable by its “F” shield mark that it began using in 1932. This logo on the underside of its products became highly identifiable in glassware.
