Just as there is a Presidential Service Badge authorized in 1964, a Vice Presidential Service Badge was also authorized, but not until Executive Order 11544 signed by President Richard M. Nixon on July 8, 1970 and amended by President Gerald R. Ford in Executive Order 11926 on July 19, 1976 to replace the eagle design.
The original badge consisted of a white enameled disc surrounded by 27 gold rays radiating from the center, 1 15/16 inches in diameter overall. Superimposed on the white disc is a brass color device taken from the 1948 seal of the Vice President of the United States (wings displayed downward) within 50 gold color encircling stars. The 1976 EO replaced the earlier Vice Presidential eagle with a similar gold brass presidential eagle design but without any surrounding stars.
The Vice Presidential Service Badge is not numbered and is issued as a permanent military decoration to be worn on Class A uniforms throughout military service even after leaving the White House post. An accompanying certificate is also issued to the military individual with name and rank.
