An original section of wooden plank from the pedestrian walkway of the Brooklyn Bridge, dating to its completion in 1883.
The former stairs, once entering and exiting the walkway of the center span, were removed in 1982 amid a critical rehabilitation project on the Brooklyn Bridge.
When the bridge celebrated its centennial in 1983, the city of New York issued multiple fragments of the wooden planks from those stairs to the general public as collectible artifacts, featuring, as well, a certificate of authenticity for each piece. This also included a medallion attached to the wood, depicting the 100th anniversary.
My example here is essentially in the same condition as it was when removed 42 years ago.
