    Hello everyone!!
Another Christmas gift I received is this early 1900's Gorham sterling silver nutmeg grater. The Gorham Silver Co. was founded in 1831 in Providence, Rhode Island. They were the largest maker of silver and silver plated items as well as bronze sculptures. Based on the date code of this one, it was made in 1903. This one was a very popular "Melon" style and measures 2" long and 1 1/2" wide.

Personal nutmeg graters were used to carry and grate nutmeg, a spice that was expensive and fragrant. Nutmeg graters were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, and were often carried in pockets or bags. It was the fashion for men to carry nutmeg in a pocket-sized silver container equipped with a grater in order to add freshly grated nutmeg to punch. Nutmeg graters are a bartenders' tool, used for adding freshly grated nutmeg to hot toddies, eggnogs, and other drinks. It was also used to grate nutmeg into milk as it began to sour in order to flavor it and hide the sour milk taste.

Thanks for stopping in for a look!!

    Scott

KooL,, if Clarence ,in the movie- it’s a wonderful life -
would’ve had one of these to go along with
      his flaming rum punch ,
he may not have been thrown out of Nicks Bar
Nothing like ,Ricks café Americano though

Well that really is Cool. A Ute’s grater had always been one of the things I’d have liked to find in the wid here in Oz. Never happened.

      Kevin,
Thanks!! I'd wanted one for a long time. I have another that's about a 100 years older than this one. I'll post it sometime soon.
