A most interesting piece of political memorabilia shows the official portrait of then Vice President Hubert Humphrey on heavy card stock with a printed written sentiment 'My best wishes and sincere appreciation, Hubert H Humphrey'.

On the reverse, though, are the signatures and remembrances of campaign staff of the 1968 presidential campaign, probably headquarters staff and volunteers.

Vice President Hubert Humphrey stepped in as Democratic nominee after President Lyndon B. Johnson bowed out of the race early on. While Humphrey would lose to Republican Richard Nixon by only .7 % of the popular vote (some 500,000 votes) he would split the Democratic votes with former Governor George Wallace of the American Independent Party who won 13.5% or nearly 10 million votes. Nixon, however, garnered 301 electoral votes to Humphrey's 191 and Wallace's 5 electoral votes.

There are quite a few mentions of RFK, Eugene McCarthy and even Edward Kennedy (although he tried in 1978 at the last minute against Jimmy Carter, Ted Kennedy lost the nomination and never campaign for president again) to carry on the fight in '72.

    Such youthful enthusiasm.
