Hello everyone!!
Since I just posted my Hessian soldier andirons, I felt it would be a great time to post these as well. They're cast iron Tweedledee and Tweedledum fireplace andirons. These are extremely rare and were made in England in the late 1800's. Of course, Tweedledee and Tweedledum are from the 1865 novel "Alice In Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll. And yes, they do look a bit creepy, but how about those green eyes!
These are extremely rare to find and on the rare occasion that I do find a set of these, they're always far far out of my budget. So, when I came across these I snatched them right up for an amazing price. They're missing their horizontal shanks, but that's not a problem for me since I don't plan to be using these as they were intended. After cleaning these fellows, I gave each one a coat of clear sealer to protect them. I keep these fellows far out of my path as they each weigh 45lbs!!! They each measure 20 3/4" tall and 11" wide. So, quite large.
And speaking of Lewis Carroll novels, I also have "The Walrus and Carpenter" andirons. The Walrus And Carpenter are from a narrative poem by Lewis Carroll, which appeared in his 1871 novel "Through The Looking Glass". I'll be posting those very soon.
Thanks very much for stopping in for a look!!
Scott
I think they're cool! Being that old and in beautiful condition. What a GREAT find!
Adorable beloved Lewis Carroll figures, your cleaning did wonders for them Scott they look awesome
DejaVu,
Thank you!! I'm in doubt that these were ever used in their 150 years of life, especially given the condition of the backsides.
Jenni,
Thanks very much!! Once I get my Walrus And Carpenter andirons out of storage, I'll post those as well.
