This is my favourite item I own. I bought it 5 years ago as simply a Continental vase and admire it every day. However, I'm intrigued as it is such a mixtures of styles. The pottery is a cream colour with what looks like speckles of flint running through it. It has been decorated using sponge ware in mustard, aubergine and colbalt blue and has a very shiny glaze which feels like orange peel. The decoration on top of this has a Chinese influence with a peony and butterfly. It's definitely got age to it and has crazing inside. The more I look at it the more I love it - but still know absolutely nothing about its origins.

I have just updated this listing a year later as having done a little more research it has lead me to think maybe I was looking in the wrong part of the World as had listed it in Art Pottery. I think it may be Chinese Flambe although cannot find any vases Continental or Chinese with the decoration applied over the background. Any suggestions to solve this mystery or even put me in the right country would be super!

Seagulls, I know nothing about pottery but I love your vase. I will bump this up in hopes that one of the very knowledgeable people see it.

Also, I just posted some current info about the royal descendants of the artist of your bookplate. It's fascinating!

Yes, it is a very beautiful vase. Five years ago I tried to find out about it's origins, age, type of decoration, glaze etc. but drew a blank. I have lived in the hope of seeing something similar to identify it, but again as it has no makers mark, I really don't know where to look. My only hope is that someone as knowledgeable as you, who is a pottery specialist, recognises it! Many thanks.
      Kind regards
