This Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) features a group of Army cooks near a mess tent.
Two of the soldiers are wearing "Hate Belts"-- leather belts with attached buttons and collar disc collected from allied as well as enemy soldiers.
The actual souvenir belts used to be readily available, but in recent years they have become much harder to find (like MANY military antiques and collectibles)!

I wonder why they call them "HATE BELTS" ? if they have allied and enemy buttons & collar discs?
It is a commonly used collector term-- used by many collectors to describe leather belts with souvenir insignia attached.
"Souvenir belt" is a better name and one that I usually use.

"Souvenir belt" does sound more appropriate , the words "hate belt" kind of sound like something the KKK would use
The name originated because SOME of the belts have ENEMY insignia on them.
Hatred of the enemy is pretty common and what better way to display that dislike than with liberated enemy insignia (from POWs and KIA).
The term "hate belt" doesn't lead me to any connection with "hate groups", I just think that souvenir better describes ALL of the belts.

Hello, I was just wondering why American soldiers would have these belts ? I have one myself and it has a German belt buckle, so did they take the belt from the Germans or did the Americans have their own belts ? Sorry to ask so many questions... thanks !!
The guy with the knife looks to be wearing a complete German belt rig (buckle/ belt) that he embellished. Not sure about the other guy-- it could be his own leather belt that he embellished.
I am fairly sure that the US issue belt was heavy cloth material and not leather.
