    This brass item is just over 6 inches long. It has fractions along both sides of the part with the opening in the middle. The piece in the middle slides along and has a line which I assume should match certain fractions. It looks like it should open up somehow, but I don't want to force it and break it. It was with my grandfather's desk items from when he worked at Fellows Gearshaper in Springfield, VT.

      It's a proportional divider. The markings give the scale. Set it for 1/3 and the
      "spread" one one end will be 1/3 rd of the other,etc.. Divider should pivot open around the screw/slider adjustment. You set the dividers while in the closed (as showen) position

      I only see one leg in the picture, shouldn't there be two legs to be functional
