I got this at a flea market in 1989. It is 6 inches long, 3 1/4 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches high with the lid on. The lid is not hinged. The carvings on it show Jesus being put on the cross. This is shown on both sides, ends and the lid. It is made of chalk, limestone or clay. It is light in weight and the color of the substance it is made of is light in color due to the fact there are some small chips and one can see it. I have searched everywhere to find out what this box is and what it was used for.
I have one of these also, however, mine is painted in very simple colors (off white background, orange, yellow and green details and the arches and framework are dark gold/brown. I think it is clay, low fire like Terra Cotta, however the clay body is not red like typical terra cotta.
I bought mine at a Country auction in the late 1990s.
I have also always wondered about it. Until yours, I have never seen another at any antique store or flea. My best guess is that it is American, from about 1900 at the end of the Victorian era. I think it is suppose to be a "faux" Medieval piece based on a Reliquary (Religious Box ). Back in Victorian times, parlors had themes, sometimes Oriental , sometimes Medieval, sometimes a combination.
Wish I could show a pic of mine, but I do not think the forum allows html.
Anyway, that's my story and I am sticking to it, LOL!
Well I just brought the box from the other room, and it is slightly different. You can take a look at some photos in my Show and Tell. I see a very strong similarity, would be interested in hearing your opinion.
I have made mistakes before , it is just part of the learning experience.
