I bought a box of dolls and bears at an estate auction in Temecula, Ca a few years ago. I bought the entire box for a ridiculously low price and found 5 treasures inside including a Steiff Teddy Baby original 1930's bear, and several dolls from the 50's. I sold all of them except for this doll. I just really enjoyed this dolls costuming because I enjoy ren-faires, and I am also an experienced belly dancer because my mom has been a dancer since before I was born.
I would like to know anything you can tell me about her or dolls like her...including any websites. I think she is celluloid, but I am not a collector, so I dont know. (I take that back- I guess I collect randonly cool old stuff that I enjoy) I could find an odd puffed up marking on her neck, it is just as ilegible in person as the picture. Looks kindof like a parial "tj"
Her braids are supposed to be pinned up. I have the original hair pins, but I dont do a good job at pinning them. The hair is a wig. Her eyes open and close. To me, I think she has Polish style clothes...but I have no clue. She has underwear, an underskirt, a skirt, then apron, a jacket, a shawl, then the waistband with coins. Clothing snaps in back, apron ties on. Her left foot has crumbling toes. Legs are held in with bands inside the joints.
I would love to know more about her.
Thank you.
Celluloid dolls always look so alike to me. At first I thought ah a Jumeau, then I thought no it's Italian, and tried to settle on German. I'm still not sure it's not German but the mark is too fuzzy. Go here and see if you can nail down the mark on her.

She has lips painted like Italy doll . They tend to have those full heart shaped lips . She is a Novelity doll for tourists I believe . From 1940's to 70's I suspect .
Thanks for sharing very pretty
Wow! I found her...kind of. She apparently is marked HJ on her neck . She is a Gura Konstanz (Lake of Bodensee) National Costume doll, Made in Germany. Made of Celluloid or Composite? Ones of the same material as mine has been listed by different people as different material.
I still dont know what region she is supposed to represent. But apparently she was one of the earlier 1930's-1940's doll. Definately pre-1945. This is based off more Gura National Dolls I found by searching "Celluloid Gura doll" and "Composition Gura doll"
I found another version of my region doll listed to be made in c1950's of hard plastic, very similar costume, just a little alterations., and the nose/facial features are molded, and hands more defined by the plastic. Found by searching "Foreign Costume DOLL by GURA c1950" I have emailed her seller to see if she know what region she is from.
But I still havent found another one the same age as mine in the same costume.
Thanks for all the info of her being a German novelty doll...it totally solved the case!
The seller of the 1950s version had no clue what region her doll was supposed to represent. So if anybody knows the region, or any other information..like if its composition or celluloid ...please post anything else you may know. I love how much I am finding out.
I have a doll just like yours, except she has on different clothes. Mine is wearing a beautiful red dress with white sleeves and black lining. Most of her dress is covered with a beautiful green apron. She has black shoes and white socks and a black bonnet type hat. she came with the a box that has drawings of a bunch of dolls or people dancing on it the tag on the box says "Gura" Hoellental (black forest) 35/ made in Germany and beside that there is a sticker that says 482 208 041 EA$7.35 which im guessing is the price but what do all the other numbers mean? and can you tell me anything else you found out about your doll. I tried to find her online and found multiple Gura dolls. they all said rare. but i still havent been able to find the one i have even with the numbers and words on the box. ive been fascinated with her ever since we got her. we are moving and the lady the owns the house showed us around and found her in the house and was going to put it in her car and said she got it when she was a lil girl from germany...my daughter kept saying she liked it and they lady was so nice she just gave the doll to my daughter. I dont know if she bought it brand new straight from the store but she is 46 so if she got it when she was a little girl..lets say my daughters age then it would only be about 40 years old. Did you come across anymore information about her since you posted this?
oh and my doll also has two letters on her neck...HD
