I found these signs 27 years ago while remodeling an old hardware store in Bellevue, OH. I found them under the floor boards in the dirt floor basement and I also discovered they survived a basement fire. The McLennan-French sign is embossed on wood. Look closely at the Pioneer sign, it has screw-eyes on the bottom edge for hanging paint chip colors. On the back of the McLennan sign is a label with instructions on using color paint chips. McLennan was in business in the late 1890's and specialized in ONYX mixed paints. The Pioneer sign was paint also manufactered by McLennan for painting farm implements both new and used back then. I had Buffalo, NY's library research Mr. McLennan and his business. Great success/wealth in a very short period of time. Not sure, but I believe a manufacturing fire put them out of business and maybe some issues with lead? We love them!

This is a VERY interesting sign.
For one, the name Onyx for a paint line is used now a days as a water borne base coat for BASF Automotive Refinishing under RM. I wonder if this has anything to do with RM at one time?
A very nice sign you have here, i have never seen one like it!
      Thanks for posting it!
