According to the Francis Lord collection this is a hand carved original Civil War canteen. The leather straps are original as well as the stand on the bottom. I am not sure if the stopper is original to the piece. The red paint is original but I am not sure if that indicates anything about its maker, Confederate or Union. Any help is appreciated.

Be careful with Lord's. He was one of the first to document Civil War equipment-- in the years since his book first came out, many of his attributions and identifications have been proven incorrect.

Thanks, do you have any info on this piece?
    5. scottvez scottvez, 13 years ago
Yes-- it is part of the group of items that are no longer considered to be Civil War.

      Thanks for stating the obvious.

Based on your title and write up, every indication was that you thought this was authentic Civil War.

      Hi,
I have a canteen similiar to yours and have done much research!
You need to check with James D. Julia auctioneers before you discount civil war!!!
I spoke with them less than a month ago as they specialize in civil war items!

      Post your canteen Redmon.

This style of canteen is not considered to be Civil War era. It may be Mexican in origin.
