Scott This picture i sent yesterday Allan P. Cook was written on front and back of photo as shown. Rebecca Putnam married William H Cook who was to be a civil war soldier? We can not find him name anywhere i records of Salem Ma men who went to the war.We have some prints of him in cloths. This prints were for GAR after the war. Gar from Salem.
Now we have this print of A.P Cook in this book with all the soldiers.
We thought his name was William H Cook. his son had the same name. but Alan P Cook III by wife's dad's name , his dad was Alan P Cook Sr. so maybe someone wrote the wrong name on the card, can you find ever name in the war or with this guys? Thanks Steve
"Adelbert" P. Cook (as signed on the CDV)
Residence Salem MA; an 18 year-old Clerk.
Enlisted on 7/5/1861 as a Private.
On 7/5/1861 he mustered into "D" Co. MA 1st Heavy Artillery
He was Mustered Out on 7/8/1864
died 1/12/1890 in Danvers, MA
There are many "William H Cook" listings from Mass-- none from Salem or the 1st Mass Arty.
I'll see if I can narrow it down.
Scott
Do you have a photo of "William H. Cook" with the ID or just the letter?
You had me confused-- I just reread everything.
The letter is written to "Mrs" William H. Cook. This is NOT written to Adelbert's wife. Adelbert died in 1890.
I haven't been able to shed any additional light on William H. Cook, but I would assume he is related to Adelbert.
There are many possibilities listed in the CW records and not enough information to narrow down.
Scott
Great story, filmnet. The letter is a wonderful family heirloom. The gorgeous handwriting in old letters like this one never ceases to amaze me!
The letter, the children in the second photo, the black soldier in the last photo--it's all so moving. Thank you for sharing these things, filmnet, and thank you Scott for sharing your knowledge.
I don't think the photographs are GAR related.
Some of the "soldiers" are too young-- they are most likely the unit of cadets that are mentioned in the letter.
The three letters on the hats of the cadets in the last photograph will help to identify the name of the institution. Can you post a blow up or provide the letters.
Thanks,
Scott
I am not familiar with the area, but would think that they are cadets from a military school in the area.
Scott I see it is not Allan after all. William H Cook my wife thought died at Andersonville but no such name there,The photo to the right closeup has him in the center the tallest looking to his right. The Beverly history people have been trying to find out about him for me. They said he did live in Salem and those shots are after the war for GAR. We do not know what years these came from? Maybe he did not go to the war after all. All we have is the letter, and in a book form 1901 he wife writer about him. I will put some pages of the book on this
What are the hat letters on the last photograph?
Scott
Scott I was told by Historical people the hats and shirts were different in the shots, so they thought it was a mixed group. At the time last year I gave up with William H Cook, he might have been a fake guy, got Rebecca pregnancy and left to the Army. We have no letters and a few diaries from here. BTW her sister wrote diaries every day on the Seawitch clipper ship 1893 and a few other years i will post one now We think her husbands father was a slave ship captain, we know this from my wifes family we have his picture from 1960s i will post now some
The last two photos here show a group of military school cadets.
Usually the hat letters will reveal the name of the school-- are the letters too hard to read?
A blow up of a hat or two from the last photograph will probably show the letters and go a long way to revealing who these young men are.
Scott
Yes this is an 810 print i did can it last year i will get file and blow hats of the young guys and W. Cook also post today.
