Found this Bible in the attic after my dad passed away. I vaguely remember him talking about getting it from his mother years and years ago. I have been searching online to find out more about it, but have had no luck at all. I am hoping maybe someone on here might be able to give me some insight on as it...possibly timeframe and value. I don't have the measurements, but it is a large Bible loaded with pictures. I couldn't find a date anywhere in it.

"De Heilige Schrift" met platen van G. Dore is Dutch for "The Holy Scriptures" with plates of G. [Gustave] Dore.

I suggest you send photos, with the title page, to Heritage Auctions and obtain an auction estimate. Condition of the book and engravings are a major factor for the value of a book like this.

Paul Gustave Doré was a famous artist and engraver. Sadly, many people take books apart in order to sell the Doré steel engravings.

      About Doré on wiki:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustave_Dor%C3%A9

Here is a "translated" listing for your book that is an 1873 printing which can't be compared unless you know which edition you own: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=nl&u=http://www.antiqbook.com/books/bookinfo.phtml%3Fo%3Dint%26bnr%3D800278&ei=QOeyTtrhPMLpsQKvwsXUAw&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CDUQ7gEwAzgK&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%2522de%2Bheilige%2Bschrift%2522%2BAND%2Bdore%26start%3D10%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26biw%3D1136%26bih%3D740%26prmd%3Dimvnsb

Thanks for the input. I'll contact Heritage and see what I can learn from them. One question...you mentioned engravings...are you meaning that some books had the actual engraving plates in them?

Sorry, I should have been clearer. The book illustrations are engraved "prints." "Steel" is the type of plate and method used to execute the print. Illustrations and/or the frontispiece (the illustration that is opposite the book's title page) in books are often seen in antiquarian books.

Printing methods as explained by Steve Bartrick Antique Prints and Maps:

To Avanderwall, I have written several books about Gustave Dore. I can tell you whatever you want to know about your book, but I need a few more details. Can you either publish here or e-mail me a scan of the full title page? Also, what is the size of your book, and in a list of illustrations, what number do they go up to? What is the title or scene of the final illustration? Some editions are one volume, some are two volumes. The Dore Bible was published in 20 countries. It was so famous it was mentioned in both Tom Sawyer and Anna Karenina. Dan Malan

      Dan,
Thanks for your willingness to help. I am not sure how to get more pics on here, if there is a way you can send me your email I can shoot some pics to you. The book measures approx 12" wide, 15" tall and 4" thick. From what I can tell, there are 60 pictures in the old testament and 40 in the new. The final picture listed in the new testament is "DE ENGEL TOONT JOHANNES HET NIEUW JERUZALEM"
