This is a sturdy old hand wrought splitting froe for making cedar shingles. I belive the handle is original. It has beatle holes and looks well-worked. Enjoy!

This is very similar to hay knives. Froes usually have the handle in the same plane asthe blade which is the same width from end to end

Motoolz You were correct above in how you described a froe, this just happens to be a specialty one which not everyone has seen. The handle on this is in the upward position for a reason. When you make wooden shake shingles they need to taper and be wedge shaped. As you tap the blade through the wood pushing or pulling the handle will change the direction of the cut slightly so you can make the taper as you cut.
