My grandfather operated a store in Hayward Wisconsin and received this from an Indian man as payment for goods. I was told it was Ojibwa and was trying to determine more about the actual origin and value. We always enjoyed it. It stands about 30 inches tall and 18 inches in diameter.
Did you ever receive any more information on your basket? My mother has an almost identical basket that her mother gave her. It was originally acquired from an American Native women in the '50s and it was old then. My mother took the basket to the Indian Museum in Mt. Pleasant MI and the curator told her that the basket was probably made in '20s or 30's by the Obijwa or Chippiwa tribes. and that it was made for their own use or to trade to tourist. He also told her that large ones (30in tall) were rare. I have no idea of the value of these baskets, if you have learned anything more or have learned of the value of these baskets, please let me know. If you send a photo to the Indian Museum in Mt. Pleasant MI, they may be able to tell you more. If you do, please forward a copy to me as I no longer have a copy of what they told me. Hope this was helpful to you and I hope we can discover and share more information about our treasures.
