Walksoftly, it's wonderful to have photos of your 3rd great grandparents! I have photos of my 2nd great grandparents and a canteen that belonged to my 3rd great grandfather, but no photo to go with that.....just a headstone! Anyway, I love all of the old photos that people post here, but it's so much more meaningful if the person posting can put a name or relationship to the face. Thanks for sharing.

When he is holding his grandson it changes him, he is not so stern looking.
Has anyone noticed the chair that he is sitting on in the second photo, this style of chair is no longer necessary today?

You can still get the prize if you can I D the chair, why it only had one arm.
    8. walksoftly walksoftly, 13 years ago
These chairs were designed so that men could sit with their sword on & it could then hang down by their side. In the photo of my maternal grandpa as a young man he is standing by one as well.

Why is the missing arm on the right? Weren't military swords worn on the left side?

Here's a couple of other sources as to the reason for one-arm chairs. They suggest they were made to accommodate bustles and heavy dresses of the times:

Love the pics. I think the 1 arm chair is for a man wearing a gun on his side. Not sure but I have a pic of my grandfather x's 3 Standing behind a one arm chair taken in1867. He was not in the military but always had a gun on in the pics I see.

Well maybe I shouldn't believe everything that I'm told at a museum:(.... My Maternal Grandfather is leaning on one of these chairs in my post from the other day
