Can anyone inform where this statue originally belonged? Its been in my family for around forty years. It stands 160mm high and has a 55mm diameter base with a thread in the bottom. I assume it was attached to something but have no idea what!
The treaded bottom leads me to believe it is a trophy topper. Winged wheel and Mercury figure would indicate some kind of speed event, probably automotive.
Thanks Gordon, all I know is that it came from a friend of my fathers who was in the automotive trade!
I'm with gordon, the top of a trophy.
I'd say MYSTERY SOLVED ?
since he was in the automotive trade it could possibly be a hood ornament off a car
Really?
It weighs 1lb 7oz, isn't that a bit heavy for a trophy topper?
no you can check some of them out. just hit antique hood ornaments and you will be surprised they weighed alot
Definitely smacks of an early radiotor cap topper hood ornament to me.
It is a radiator mascot, probably British, Rolls-Royce. Thanks for sharing. Vanskyock and retro was right on the money on this.
I disagree, and here's the reason why...........:>The Spirit of Ecstasy is one of the most well known motor car mascot in the world. Designed by Charles Robinson Sykes, The Spirit of Ecstasy has adorned the radiators of Rolls-Royce motor cars since 1911. This wonderful mascot was modeled after a young woman who had bewitching beauty, intellect and esprit - but not the social status which might have permitted her to marry the man with whom she had fallen in love.
So unless someone can do otherwisw I'm gonna stick to trophy topper.
