Here is a recent find, Signed oil painting by listed french artist Alexander Defaux. Exceptional quality 1859 painting. Trying to decide, keep it, or move it? By the way, wheres the original art category? Why doesn't collectors weekly just adopt the same categories as ebay?

Update: I took this to Antiques Roadshow in Rapid City this spring. It was apraised at $5,000.00 to $7,000.00. I can tell you that that will never happen in my market area (South Dakota).

My opinion is that prices given on Antiques Roadshow is about double what I would expect on the usual markets.

I would have to agree with you blunderbuss, my partner and I took a number of items for appraisal. For the most part the appraiser's just shot from the hip, with no research. Which is understandable with the number of items passing before them. This was the exception. The appraiser actually researched it and found a comparable painting that had sold at auction recently for around $6,500.00, $7,000.00 plus with buyers premium. He used this for his valuation.
