My great great grandmother made this scrapbook for my grandmother in 1888. I know it's after the fact but I finally got around to posting these Christmas images. It's like stepping back in time when I look through the pages of this large old leather bound book. Thanks for looking! Hope everyone had a Merry!

Nice wolcott !! Great Great Grandma picked some interesting pieces to use on this scrapbook. That first pic is very interesting, almost gotta wonder what was in that fireplace and the kitties stealing a piece of cake is priceless ! : )

Thanks again Hedge!! The young lady in the photo over my "name" is my grandmother. The fireplace scene is pretty hallucinatory in a victorian way!
I love the kitties too. Some of the pictures from the book (which I haven't posted) were very odd and interesting as well. Thanks for looking Hedge :)

It looks like most of them were hand cut from postcards, magazines and newspaper. I guess she had a steady hand. Thanks BeauxP!

Very cool Wolcott! Wonder why she saved these particular images. Were there notes on the back?
Also wondering what those kitties are snacking on!

Thanks Amber Rose. The cake looks good doesn't it? lol
I think it wasn't uncommon in Victorian times to make scrapbooks from postcards and such to create a theme for a present to someone. In this case she made her two year old grandchild a scrap book of pretty and amusing images to remember her by. I'll admit some of the images don't strike me as amusing for a two year old but times were different then I suppose. I didn't take any of the pictures off of the pages. I would hate to compromise the album from it's original form. I am curious if any of the postcards were written on though! Maybe one day I'll take one or two of them of the page.

Wow, I really love this first image. How big is the actual print? Is this a postcard?

Well you lets know what those cards say if you do sneak a peak.
Your Grandmother is a beauty. Can you imagine having to put up your hair everyday?
    11. wolcott1 wolcott1, 13 years ago
AmberRose and Rocker-sd, You both motivated me to go back into the closet and haul the album out again (It's 20" by 16").
So to answer your question Rocker-sd, the first image is a big Christmas card (6" by 8 3/4"). I pulled up a corner without bending it and found that it was a card by Louis Prang. Wiki stated that he was sometimes known as "The father of the American Christmas card." This particular card's artist (C.D. Weldon) was the first prize winner of the contest that Prang held in 1884 to stimulate ideas for Christmas card designs.
I still don't know if there is writing on the back. I'm torn about whether or not it's the right thing to do in terms of keeping the album in tact. Thanks so much for your interest! Now I'm curious about the other images!
AmbeRose, I cannot imagine having to put my hair up like that everyday, lol. I think I saw my grandmother with her hair down only one time when I was a child. She passed away in 1975. Bless her!

The name of the design of the card mentioned is "little girl before the fire dreaming of the wonders of Christmas" http://livaudaisnet.com/xmas/cards/xmascard05b.html
