    These are my Great Grandparents on my mother's side on the family. They were her Father's parents. I'm not sure when the photo was taken but I would think it's the late 1800's becuase my Grandfather was born in 1884. Why did people never smile in photos back then?

      I'll tell you why they didn't smile, there was nothing to smile about back then. Times were extremely hard.

      Wonderful old photo!, you're lucky to have it. I've been collecting such pieces for many years,....the fact that they're not smiling is just what makes them most appealing to me. I'm sure that life was hard back then, but I think that one of the reasons they're not smiling is because this type of photo required a longer exposure.
