    I found this 1965 quarter in an old junk box with some other coins thought it was a bit odd I have silver coins but this coin does not appear to be silver it is the same size as a normal quarter but has no reeded edge and no copper showing weighs 5.5 grams what is it

      This coin may have been in a casino for a long time. Such coins were constantly run through the counting and rolling machines and exhibit this type wear.

      Militarist is correct, I have found coins in the street that were so beat up you could not see the filler any more. I run 5k's in the streets and find all sorts of stuff, money, tools, credit cards, dead animals, misc. auto parts, etc.

      took coin to a local coin show over the weekend local collector states that it is a wrong stock error 25c on 5c stock altho beat up it was worth $40.00 to him should I have sold it ?

      Unless the dealer actually weighed the coin or measured the thickness he just made a 40.00 mistake and you hit the jackpot. The nickel planchet weighs much less than a quarter and the diameter is smaller. If the diameter is correct the coin would have to be thinner than a normal quarter and there should be a visable weakness of the detail. Based on your scan I think you hit the jackpot and the dealer paid a 39.75 wishful thinking fine.

      If the collector is correct in thinking that the wrong metal was used to make the quarter blanks. That would be possible, Iguess but very unlikely. Another possibility would be if the mint was stiking foreign coins at that time with the same size as a quarter and a foreign blank was left in the feeding machine part when quarter production was started. In any event the condition of your coin would still minimalize the value and I still think you made a good deal by selling it for 40.00.

      I just found the same quarter. I thought it had a coating error of some sort. Mine is 5.5g and the edging seems to be smoother.
