I just received this basket as a birthday present from my Mom this month. She thought it was old and so do I. I've tried to do some research but what I have found is that it may be from California. I'm here in Indiana. It seemed unlikely to get so far. It's 4 1/4 inches tall and 7 1/2 inches wide. Very tight weave and in very good condition.
Does anyone know it's history or worth?

Contact a place called Len's Indian Territory online. They give free appraisals and fast too. This place is full of Native American artifacts.

You would be amazed to know Native American basketry was bought and taken back by tourists to where they live, all over the world. They show up all over. You have a great basket there and it is certainly valuable. It would be a great idea to get it appraised.

I do not know if this user still checks back here or not, but I wanted to give an ansewer to the question they had about this beautiful basket. I am 99% sure now that this basket is a Washoe Degikup basket. The weave and the design and only the natural color and the black, this is a wonderful, wonderful example of the artistry of the Washoe hands that made this. It is made with a single rod (they used to use three rods together) of Willow, and the black design weaving is done with Bracken Fern. This is likely to have been made, due to the patina on the basket, around the 1930's....or close to that year/s. This is a treasure, although I do not know if the user has sold it or just put it away and forgot about it. If they do still have it, I hope this basket has been given a special place in their home. To showcase a perfect example of Native American artistry. I could never afford one of these baskets, they are priced so high and rightly so. So I am happy just being able to see examples in pictures :)

Addition, 1% Apache? I have such insomnia and I have not been able to sleep at all. My mind is kinda out there today.....LOL

Must be something in the air. No sleep here either--I am in Navajo-Apache country, and I don't recognize it.

PostCardCollector, I am going into my second sleepless night, 1:30AM and still up. I am starting to see shadow people in my peripheral vision LOL. I have had horrible insomnia since I was a teenager...and I am just a bit older than that now...um yep.

I really do think this is a wonderful Washoe degikup basket. Thanks for the nod so I can take back that 1% uncertainty.

2 Benedryl tablets will put you to sleep. At night I can't stop "thinking--,thoughts keep whirling. I sympathize with you!
Your basket is a nice piece.
